Product Photography Practice

For the longest, I assume that product photography involves complex lighting set up. My mind was totally blown when I saw a tutorial on how to do high quality product photography with an simple set up. The set up I choose to go with is a 65" umbrella with a diffuser, 1 speedlite with a small diffuser attached as well and 2 dinner trays.

1 of the dinner trays was used to place the wine bottle on(the surface has a nice reflective look). The 2nd dinner tray was placed right in front on the diffused umbrella to block the light. The light that is not blocked will act as a rim light.  My speedlite was place about 45 degrees from the bottle. You dont have to use a speedlite for this though, you can simple use a reflector to bounce like on the objects. I love the way this looks!

Being a big nerd, I tried doing the same thing on my Power Rangers helmet and Kylo Ren helmet. With the Kylo Ren helmet, I removed both trays and place a black cloth in the center area of the diffused umbrella. I also removed the speed lite and use a reflector instead. Both turned out great!
